Visitors came in steadily for the annual DUMBO Open Studios, a celebrated event where artists open their creative spaces to the public. Despite not intending to sell his work, Adams left his loft open, valuing the connections and conversations facilitated by the event and appreciating the artist community fostered by Two Trees, the building owner.

Adams, the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings, highlighted his appreciation for the artistic opportunities he received, mentioning a Black Lives Matter mural he was commissioned to create during the pandemic. He expressed gratitude for the support, noting that many artists struggled to sustain themselves during that period.

DUMBO, once known mainly as an artists’ haven, has seen many artists depart due to rising commercial rents following the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, hundreds continue to work in this artsy Brooklyn neighborhood. This year’s Art in DUMBO saw participation from more than 175 artists across 21 buildings, organized by Team Dumbo and Two Trees, which offers subsidized studio space to a select group of artists through its residency programs.

Even with a tamer crowd due to rain, the event’s atmosphere was lively. Cultural affairs director Ariel Willmott from Two Trees and the Walentas Family Foundation reported significant sales and future exhibition opportunities for participating artists. She underscored the importance of such events in fostering public appreciation for the arts.

The bustling weekend saw a variety of artworks from colorful psychedelic backdrops by Dakota Gearhart to intricately designed living sculptures by Natalie Collette Wood. Wood’s living installations, incorporating succulents and moss, are set to grace Harlem’s Jackie Robinson Park, and she remains hopeful they will continue to be appreciated without damage.

At the Sharpe Walentas residency, innovative works on paper gathered attention, ranging from Bianca Fields’s energetic sketches to Amy Cutler’s enigmatic drawings. Jason Karolak showcased kaleidoscopic pieces inspired by his research in Senegal.

Some studios at the site were expansive enough to double as galleries. Elizabeth Hazan utilized her space for the Platform Project Space, hosting the group exhibition “Free Bird,” curated by Tracy McKenna.

Elsewhere, the Center for Cuban Studies exhibited over 400 small paper works of Cuban cats, carefully transported over multiple trips by co-founder Sandra Levinson.

At 68 Jay Street, Andrea Sanders showcased blur-focused photographs capturing the essence of rural landscapes, exploring themes of memory and solitude. On the same floor, Lydia Nobles’s substantial sculptures complemented Samantha Keely Smith’s dream-inspired paintings.

Smack Mellon’s studios on Plymouth Street featured artists engaging with themes of environmental change. Matthew Li’s unique biodegradable houses promise to distribute hope across the city, infusing life into urban spaces.

DUMBO Open Studios proved once more to be a vibrant platform celebrating art and community, highlighting both resilience and creativity within this iconic Brooklyn neighborhood.

**Cey Adams Unveils New Mixed-Media Collage at DUMBO Open Studios** This past Sunday, April 19, noted artist Cey Adams completed his latest mixed-media collage on a large wooden drafting table in his Jay Street studio.
