The 2026 World Design Capital is Frankfurt Rhein-Main in Germany, featuring innovative projects and programming that delve into the nuances of design and its potential. One aspect of WDC includes temporary architecture, such as pavilions. Starting April 30, 2026, the Spanish Design Pavilion will welcome visitors.

Spain’s reversible pavilion reimagines temporary architecture as a circular, public system. The initiative defines architecture as a flexible infrastructure for cultural exchange instead of a static entity, transforming its Instituto Cervantes garden into a venue for exhibitions, performances, and community gatherings.

Architects José Ramón Tramoyeres and Javier Cortina created the pavilion as a completely reversible structure that can be disassembled, moved, and reassembled without producing architectural waste. They structured the system using modular elements made of wood, ceramic, and textile, which fosters a lightweight structural logic and allows for repeated cycles of building and dismantling. This strategy emphasizes material efficiency and reuse over permanence in temporary cultural infrastructure.

The design takes inspiration from Antoni Gaudí’s spatial and structural concepts, especially his fusion of geometry, material behavior, and structural continuity. The architects interpret these influences into a modular framework that produces continuous curved shapes through repetition instead of mass carving. They incorporate historical references into a modern system that values fabrication logic and adaptability over mere imitation.

The pavilion will host exhibitions, performances, and civic discussions throughout its duration. Its open design promotes movement and interaction, while incorporating environmental sensitivity through filtered light, ventilation, and low-energy lighting that alters the spatial atmosphere from day to night. This programmatic versatility aligns the structure with the broader objectives of WDC 2026.

The project promotes an architectural model characterized by reversibility, mobility, and material recovery instead of permanence. It creates a framework where temporary structures function as adaptable systems, capable of fitting into various contexts over time. The pavilion exemplifies how circular design principles can reinvent cultural architecture into a transferable methodology rather than a singular form.

The Spanish Design Pavilion is set to open in Frankfurt on April 30, 2026, serving as a temporary cultural installation for World Design Capital 2026.

It features reversible, modular architecture within a public environment.

The design converts Gaudí’s geometric and structural concepts into a lightweight assembly of wood, ceramic, and textile components, creating a flexible and reusable pavilion for exhibitions and events.

The pavilion illustrates how reusable architecture can surpass a single location by relocating and reconfiguring itself across future scenarios without dependence on permanence.

Spanish Design Pavilion: [Website](https://www.spanishdesignpavilion.com/home) | [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/spanishdesignpavilion/)

My Modern Met granted permissions to feature photos by ICEX.

Related Articles:
– [This Living Concept Reimagines Architecture for Islands Vulnerable to Climate Change](https://mymodernmet.com/mask-architects-fiji-solar-crown/)
– [Designer Unveils How the Burning Man Temple Will Look in 2026, and It’s Inspired by a Rare Flower](https://mymodernmet.com/burning-man-moon-temple/)
– [Rammed Earth-Inspired Concept House Looks Like a Rocky Formation in the Desert](https://mymodernmet.com/rammed-earth-house-utah-desert-observatory/)
– [Sagrada Família Reaches Full Height as Gaudí’s Central Tower Is Completed](https://mymodernmet.com/sagrada-familia-central-tower-completed/)

Every two years, the World Design Organization awards the title of World Design Capital to a city or region.
