Renowned for turning found materials and discarded debris into poetic sculptures and collages, Herms’s work embodied themes of impermanence with a unique blend of pathos and humor.

Born on July 5, 1935, in Woodland, California, Herms began his artistic journey after leaving the University of California, Berkeley. Moving to Los Angeles, he immersed himself in the vibrant Beat scene of Topanga Canyon, working alongside luminaries such as Wallace Berman. Herms helped produce the literary journal “Semina” and began printing his own works under Love Press.

His introduction to assemblage coincided with a pivotal insight from Berman: any object could captivate interest when properly contextualized. Herms’s first assemblage exhibit, “Secret Exhibition” in a Hermosa Beach lot in 1957, signaled the start of his artistic exploration. Despite being a private showing, it set the stage for his inclusion in “The Art of Assemblage” at New York’s MoMA in 1961, which solidified his place in California’s art scene alongside contemporaries like Ed and Nancy Kienholz and Bettye Saar.

Throughout his career, Herms’s exhibitions spanned respected venues such as San Francisco’s Batman Gallery and Los Angeles’s Museum of Contemporary Art. His works, such as “Portals to Poetry” and “Clocktower: Monument to the Unknown,” enriched Los Angeles’s public art landscape, though not without controversy, as seen with the removal of “Moon Dial” from Beverly Hills Park.

Despite early achievements, Herms faced challenges in achieving mainstream recognition. As noted by Mat Gleason in a 2010 “Huffington Post” column, Herms was often overlooked as a cultural icon. However, recent years have witnessed a resurgence of interest in his work through exhibitions pairing him with new generations of artists as well as features in initiatives like the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time.

Herms’s ability to infuse playfulness into overlooked objects made his art memorable and distinct. As noted by gallerist Louis Stern, Herms was “deeply committed to the rebellious, independent path he forged.” His legacy endures, inspiring reflection on the beauty found in the ordinary and the overlooked.

George Herms, founder of the West Coast Assemblage movement and a transformative figure in the art world, passed away on April 24 at the age of 90.
