Utilizing a stick, the hiker probed the debris—and uncovered something ancient.

All of a sudden, he noticed something shimmering, the man recounts in a translated statement from the University of Stavanger in Norway. Yet he didn’t fully grasp what he had discovered.

Experts enlightened him. Likely from the sixth century C.E., it was a golden artifact that may have once adorned the scabbard of a warrior leader’s sword. The rectangular object, approximately six centimeters wide and weighing slightly over an ounce, is adorned with serpentine designs and beaded golden threads—a clue, the researchers concluded, that it was crafted by skilled goldsmiths. Fewer than twenty similar items have ever been uncovered in northern Europe, making it the first of its kind found in Norway’s coastal Rogaland county.

An illustration of the scabbard ornament showcases the serpentine pattern in darker purple.

Ellen Hagen, Archaeological Museum, University of Stavanger

Such findings astonish researchers, states Håkon Reiersen, an archaeologist at the university’s Museum of Archaeology, in the translated statement. The likelihood of discovering something like it is minimal.

The state of the discovery also caught archaeologists off guard. Unlike other sword scabbard fittings from the period, this one is especially worn, indicating that an elite, influential chieftain wielded the weapon for an extended duration. However, other evidence suggests that even this esteemed warrior had to confront the challenges of sixth century Norway—the fact that the artifact was likely interred in a rock crevice implies it was offered as a tribute to deities.

This silver necklace, unearthed in the 19th century, was likely another sacrificial offering.

Svein Skare, University Museum in Bergen

Unrest was rampant in Norway during the 500s. Volcanic eruptions and climate shifts might have led to agricultural failures and famine around the same time the continent faced its first plague epidemic. Per a 2024 study in the journal Norwegian Archaeological Review, these crises caused a significant decrease in population during the sixth century.

Other offerings to deities have been discovered recently in the vicinity. In the 19th century, cultivators unearthed a silver necklace, and in 1907 a substantial Roman bronze cauldron, likely manufactured on the Rhine River, was found.

Did you know? Magnet fishers retrieved a 1,000-year-old Viking sword from a river in England in 2023, likely dating back to the Viking invasion of Britain. That same year, metal detectorists in Norway discovered an early ninth century gravesite, resulting in the excavation of coins, textile tools, and jewelry.
