Giant Lit Sphere Showcases Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2025

Expo 2025 in Osaka commenced on April 13, attracting attendees to more than 150 international pavilions envisioned by acclaimed architects. The Netherlands Pavilion, designed by RAU Architects, boasts a remarkable radiant orb enveloped in layers of flowing steel, reminiscent of a sculpture from Expo 1970. This design encapsulates the pavilion’s theme, “Common ground,” symbolizing a new era.

The pavilion’s architecture comprises two sections: one dedicated to events and another focused on experiences, featuring a café and shop. Collectively, they uphold the central sphere and convey the ideas of unity and sustainability. RAU Architects prioritize energy, circularity, and human accountability towards the Earth, underscoring our planet as a closed system with limited resources.

A sleek RVS sheet atop provides an unobstructed view of the sphere, mirroring a flawless image for guests on the wooden ring encircling the Expo grounds. Within, a mirrored ceiling guarantees constant visibility of the orb. The pavilion’s steel framework, weighing 1620 tons, adheres to Japanese regulations for earthquake and typhoon resistance. Designed for temporary use during the Expo, this sustainable structure is crafted for straightforward disassembly, relocation, and repurposing after the event, promoting a circular economy.

Visitors can delve into the innovative design and mission of the Netherlands Pavilion and other pioneering pavilions at Expo 2025, each offering distinctive interpretations of global and sustainable themes.
