Contemporary Spa in Rome Rejuvenates Timeless Bathing Tradition
Situated in the historical heart of Rome, a boutique hotel presents an opulent spa experience. Six Senses Rome honors the traditional Roman bathing ritual with a one-hour experience designed to ease and rejuvenate tired travelers.
Milan-based designer Patricia Urquiola, responsible for the hotel’s entire design, has fashioned a serene, peaceful atmosphere for relaxation. Guests are enveloped in a friendly environment featuring travertine-lined walls and a gentle earth-toned color scheme. While experiencing the Roman baths, guests will partake in a contemporary interpretation of the ancient custom, which includes three plunge pools: calidarium (hot), tepidarium (warm), and frigidarium (cold).
In ancient Rome, public bathhouses were a common establishment. Bathing served as both a practical and social requirement that involved all social strata, becoming a hallmark of everyday life in the historic city. Nowadays, guests at Six Senses, along with external patrons, can indulge in a similar experience and enhance it further, as the spa provides a broad range of wellness services. An herbal healing hammam features a full-body scrub using Sicilian raw sea salt, sweet fennel, and rosemary, while advanced biohacking treatments complement traditional massages and facials.
Eugene Kim, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of My Modern Met, had the opportunity to visit the spa himself. “What attracted me to the Roman baths at Six Senses Rome was the modern design and beautifully elaborate floral etchings on the walls,” he recounts. “My body and mind felt entirely relaxed as I transitioned between the warm pools, cold plunge, sauna, and resting areas. The ice fountain was a distinctive element, where fresh ice is produced to cool down by rubbing it on your body.”
The visit is worthwhile. “Overall, I had a phenomenal experience and would strongly recommend a visit, whether you’re staying at the stunning hotel or merely dropping by for the spa.”
