Latvia’s Passports Honor the Nation’s Natural Landscape

When Latvia updated its passports in 2024, the nation aimed to enhance the document’s security and anti-counterfeiting features. To achieve this, they opted for an artistic design that reflects the landscapes of the Baltic nation. Now, the country’s citizens can carry a piece of art with them while traveling.

“The new model passport is a tribute to the stunning nature of Latvia,” states Maira Roze, the head of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, regarding the new passport. “While traveling abroad with the new passport, each one of us can take Latvian nature along in the form of a safe, dependable passport.”

The passport is crafted to provide a journey through the seasonal variety of Latvia. Nature imagery by photographer Andris Eglītis adorns the pages and truly comes alive under UV light, revealing hidden elements. However, the use of different imagery on each page is not merely a visual choice; it also complicates the production of counterfeits.

Emblems of Latvia—including its coat of arms, flag, and national anthem—are interspersed throughout the passport, alongside further representations of nature. Cranes, common birds in Latvia, serve as a unifying theme across the pages of the document, symbolizing departure and return. In total, 20 distinct bird species are depicted on the pages of the passport.

For security reasons, the passport incorporates UV printing, holographic strips, multi-laser images, a vibrantly colored passport photo, and an optically variable ink feature that prints as an oak leaf, which appears in various colors. All these elements combine to make Latvia’s passport one of the most secure and visually appealing.

Latvia updated its passports.

The new passport, unveiled in February 2024, is a celebration of Latvia’s breathtaking natural landscapes, showcasing different images across its pages.

Under UV light, the pages reveal even more stunning visuals.

The UV light, accompanied by holographic strips and advanced printing methods, enhances the security of the travel document.

All these design choices allow Latvia’s citizens to travel securely with a work of art in their pocket.
