Innovative Showcase Presents Distinct Experience with Classic Hong Kong Fabrics

In Hong Kong, the Palace Museum has revitalized a variety of artifacts. Throughout the establishment, textiles vibrantly explode, flourish, swell, and resonate, turning previously blank walls into lively tapestries. These engaging scenes comprise the majority of the museum’s inaugural thematic, multimedia exhibition, which honors the visual culture of Hong Kong and China through one of their most prolific customs: patterns.

Named The Ways in Patterns, the exhibition reinterprets the museum’s architecture, ceramics, and embroidered textiles across seven unique spaces. Each environment has been crafted using digital technology, bringing to life visuals ranging from a dragon weaving through swirling clouds to a cat exuberantly leaping through an open courtyard. Walls suddenly transform into dynamic canvases, revealing a new aspect of historical patterns that would otherwise remain unnoticed if left completely static.

To amplify the sense of amazement, some areas even integrate surprising elements beyond the museum’s confines. One space, for example, is characterized by a replica of a porcelain bowl, its interior adorned with a multitude of intertwined flowers, each responding to a gentle breeze. Another area utilizes the ceiling, highlighting intricate caisson designs interspersed with networks of interconnected animations. Once more, the imagery of the dragon returns, this time soaring across the ceiling with glistening, golden scales.

“Traditional Chinese patterns are recognized for their lasting vibrancy and allure,” states Leo Kung, chairman of the Hong Kong Palace Museum’s board. “The Ways in Patterns invites audiences into an immersive realm of sophistication within [those] traditional aesthetics.”

This “realm of sophistication” wouldn’t resonate nearly as powerfully if it weren’t for the museum’s careful curation. The Ways in Patterns heavily relies on its artifacts, including a decorative plate showcasing peaches and bats, alongside a blue robe embellished with golden cranes and twisting branches. By examining these items and their associated patterns through a modern perspective, the “rich origins of these elaborate designs” become increasingly discernible, according to the museum. Audience engagement is also strongly encouraged, with a dedicated section for individuals to create personal designs of swimming fish and soaring birds.

“This exhibition exemplifies our dedication to promoting mutual understanding and respect among various cultures,” remarks Luo Xianliang, deputy director of the Palace Museum.

The Ways in Patterns is currently available for viewing at the Hong Kong Palace Museum until October 13, 2025.
