Smithsonian Issues Defiant Statement Countering Trump’s Interference

Since President Trump announced the firing of Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery Director Kim Sajet for her alleged focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), Sajet has continued her role. The Smithsonian clarified that only its Secretary, overseen by the Board of Regents, can make such decisions. Trump’s decision has not affected Sajet’s position so far, as the board emphasizes the Smithsonian’s nonpartisan mission and independence from political influence. Sajet, leading the NPG since 2013, has focused on making it more inclusive. Congressional Democrats condemned Trump’s executive order to eliminate divisive ideologies from the Smithsonian, demanding its independence be secured. The Board of Regents has instructed Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch to set clear expectations for museum directors, with an ongoing evaluation of the Smithsonian’s policies and practices.
