Giant Lighted Oracles Employ AI to Convey Philosophical Perspectives on Existence and the Future
Directed by artist and founder Nimrod Weis, ENESS, based in Australia, is a diverse team that investigates the convergence of the virtual and physical realms through interactive public art. Their recent display, named The Whispering Mountains, showcases “AI-filled” hill-like beings at the base of The Remarkables, an exquisite snow-covered mountain range in Queenstown, New Zealand.
These welcoming, luminous giants function like “ancient oracles,” awakening as individuals pass by to recount their tales and impart their knowledge. ENESS states, “In a perpetual state of reflection, contemplating contemporary routes to happiness, The Whispering Mountains awaken only when guests stroll by, poised to convey their insights to those who have traveled to seek their responses.” The creators warn, “However, listeners should be cautious! Deeper inquiries are invited.”
The inflatable forms with LED eyes transmit voice messages generated by AI, blending contemplative notions with philosophical inquiries. Some of the messages are whimsical, while others lean towards introspective. Collectively, their communications prompt us to contemplate our current existence and the potential influence of AI on our future.
Although seemingly amicable, the whispering mountains also provoke some disquieting realizations. ENESS emphasizes that AI represents the first technology in human history capable of crafting its own narrative. In a commentary regarding the installation, the team poses the question, “What does this foreboding capability signify for the future of human cultural creation? Will literature and new spiritual texts—historically sources of wisdom—continue to reflect human craftsmanship, or will AI commence the re-writing of tomorrow?”
