Artist Illustrates Mental Health Voyage through Futuristic Urban Landscape Artwork Throughout the Years

For numerous creatives, the urge to create art originates from an ineffable aspect of their mind. Contemporary French artist Margritt Martinet exemplifies this, feeling an intrinsic necessity to draw, regardless of how much time a piece demands. She produces expansive, futuristic urban landscapes in pencil and ink that can span years to finish.

“When I embark on a large drawing, I am unaware of the time and effort it will require; I simply perceive a vast area unfolding before me, and I am untroubled by the duration of its creation,” Martinet shared with My Modern Met. “My approach involves instinctively allowing everything in my mind to pour out. Instinct leads me to initiate several large pieces concurrently, transitioning between drawings based on my feelings and thoughts.”

Martinet devoted four years to completing the Maxi Bibulle, a massive cloud of countless “bubbles” clustered together. Currently, this committed artist is concentrating on her latest endeavor, Maxi Futur/amas, a project that has already been evolving for four years. This artwork features detailed grids and intricate structures, stacked layer upon layer like an overcrowded metropolis. One can almost envision hover cars and spacecraft gliding through the extensive, futuristic urban landscape.

Martinet’s intricate compositions evolve naturally and intuitively. “What I cherish most about my process is the uncertainty of what the final piece will resemble,” she explains. “I relish uncovering the shapes, lines, curves, and concealed details of my forthcoming drawing as I progress. I encounter it with each advancement.”

Martinet is a qualified art therapist and frequently incorporates therapeutic and self-reflective elements into her artwork. “My process acts as a form of therapy; without drawing, I wouldn’t be able to live ‘normally,’” she confesses. “It’s essential for me to externalize everything from my mind onto paper. When I refrain from drawing, my mental processes become chaotic, turning me into a genuine gremlin for those around me and myself.”
