Thai Art Center Cancels Exhibition Due to Pressure from China

An exhibition in Bangkok highlighting state violence and resistance was modified under pressure from the Chinese Embassy in Thailand. The show, featuring artists from Tibet, Hong Kong, and the Uyghur diaspora, faced censorship to avoid diplomatic tension, specifically referencing China’s treatment of Uyghurs. The exhibition, “Constellation of Complicity: Visualising the Global Machinery of Authoritarian Solidarity,” at the Bangkok Art and Culture Center (BACC), included blacked-out text and removed artworks. The curators fled after pressure from Chinese officials. Artists affected, like Tenzin Mingyur Paldron, expressed concerns over censorship impacting artistic expression and diplomatic relations.
