Impressionist-Style Artwork Portrays Everyday Life in Zanzibar
Artist Dullah Wise infuses an impressionistic flair into portrayals of life in Zanzibar. His landscape artwork highlights the Tanzanian archipelago with vibrant hues and bold brushstrokes. The scenes illustrate an urban culture featuring stone pathways and also a locale that flourishes by the sea; sailboats glide across the waters with buildings and palm trees visible in the background. Enhanced by Wise’s use of purples, oranges, and blues, it presents a picturesque view of daily existence.
We first encountered Wise in 2017 as a rising artist who captured the essence of Zanzibar’s locals, particularly the everyday life in Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage site). His art was even highlighted in a video on our YouTube channel.
“Since the My Modern Met video, my art career has expanded in remarkable ways,” Wise informs My Modern Met in an update. “The feature provided my work with exposure, drawing in new collectors, invites to exhibit globally, and chances to participate in artist residencies, including several sessions at Gibb’s Farm in Ngorongoro and the Four Seasons Serengeti. I’ve also held solo exhibitions in Tanzania, Kenya, and the UK, as well as group showcases throughout East Africa.”
The pleasure in following an artist’s journey is witnessing how their visual expression transforms over time, particularly as they strive to hone their craft. “In the last few years, my artistic practice has progressed to delve more thoroughly into the lively life and culture of Zanzibar through an impressionistic perspective,” Wise shares. “I’ve explored plein air techniques, larger murals, and thematic series inspired by local markets, coastal living, and ecological conservation. My color palette has become more vivid, and my brushwork increasingly expressive, mirroring the island’s energy and rhythms.”
