Mural Displaying Complex Lace Design Highlights Romanian City’s Cultural Textile Legacy

A structure in Ploiești, Romania, has had a massive piece of lace attached to its exterior—at least, that’s the impression it gives. Polish street artist NeSpoon has cast her distinctive charm, creating a monumental mural that showcases intricate ornamental lace. With astonishing precision—particularly considering the expansive size—and delicate drop shadows, it gives the appearance of genuine lace crafted to reach five stories high.

NeSpoon designed the mural for the fourth iteration of the Artown NOW festival in Ploiești. “[It’s] an industrial city known for its oil refining sector,” the artist shares with My Modern Met. “There are three refineries present, and you can genuinely sense the characteristic sulfur-like odor in the atmosphere.” In the 1980s and 1990s, lace was particularly prominent in Romania. “[It] was viewed as an emblem of cultural heritage and refined taste. It could be found in nearly every household, often displayed atop televisions, with a glass fish resting on it—a peculiar tradition from Communist era, symbolizing prosperity and wealth.”

The Polish street artist has consistently drawn inspiration from lacework. Captivated by the details of this craft, she has delved into its vast artistic possibilities, ranging from crafting stencils with lace to constructing complete installations featuring it. Some of her boldest projects are towering hyperrealistic murals, like this recent one, which took five days to finalize. As in her other murals, NeSpoon incorporated a lace design specific to the local culture to influence her artwork.

“The wall project drew its inspiration from both the lace and the distinctive shape of the wall itself, while the color scheme served as a logical orange counterpoint to the prevailing browns of the environment,” she clarifies. “Throughout the process, numerous individuals approached me to show similar lace patterns, validating the authenticity of this tradition.”

Thus, the “Capital of Black Gold” joins over 100 cities where NeSpoon’s art has been displayed—or immortalized on walls. The triumph of her creations reflects the universal appreciation for lacework, even though each area of the world possesses its unique creative interpretation.

Lace can convey numerous meanings shaped by personal associations. “Lace, to me, signifies love, harmony, peace, happiness, and a bond to memories of cherished times, the family home, tranquility, and comfort,” the artist reveals. Her aim with this latest addition is for the residents of Ploiești to feel likewise when they encounter her masterpiece. “What I hope people will take away from this mural is a feeling of calm and joy—that they smile upon seeing it, and that they feel reassured that everything will be alright.”
