Exhibition of Twentieth Century Portrait Photography at the National Arts Club
The National Arts Club (NAC) proudly announces the commencement of its 2025–26 season with a landmark exhibition titled *Influence and Identity | Twentieth Century Portrait Photography from the Bank of America Collection*. Hosted in NAC’s historic Gramercy Park building in New York City, this exhibition is a part of the Bank of America Art in Our Communities® program, presenting a curated selection of 83 photographs by celebrated international photographers and master portraitists from the 1920s to the 1960s, a period often referred to as the golden age of photography. The exhibition features iconic portraits of legendary figures such as Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, and Miles Davis, reflecting the spirited era portrayed through the lens of some of the most respected photographers.
Highlighting influential figures, the *Influence and Identity* exhibition includes images of Salvador Dalí, who received the NAC’s 1957 Medal of Honor for Fine Arts, Inge Morath, with the NAC’s 1999 Medal of Honor for Photography, and Alfred Stieglitz, a pivotal figure in photography who curated a groundbreaking show at the National Arts Club in 1902, catalyzing the Photo-Secession movement.
The exhibition showcases works by notable portraitists including Antony Armstrong-Jones, Richard Avedon, Yousuf Karsh, and Gisèle Freund, along with acclaimed photographers like Berenice Abbott, Imogen Cunningham, and Brassaï. These artists, masters of their craft, employed the modern medium of photography to create images that immortalized the commanding presence of their subjects, thereby defining the photographic portraiture of the era.
*Influence and Identity* is free and accessible to the public, opening its doors Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm, and on weekends from 10am to 4pm.
