Trump-Targeted Curator Appointed as Director of Milwaukee Art Museum

Kim Sajet, former director of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG), has been appointed as the new director of the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM), effective September 22. This appointment follows her departure from the NPG after President Trump claimed he fired her over her support for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. The Smithsonian, overseeing the NPG, refuted his claim, stating only its Secretary and Board of Regents could make such decisions. Sajet resigned, citing her decision as best for the institution.

Sajet expressed enthusiasm for MAM’s vibrant culture and history of experimental exhibitions, aiming to expand commitments to living artists and educational opportunities. Her tenure coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Bradley Collection of Modern Art at MAM, featuring works by Kandinsky, Picasso, and Rothko. The milestone will kick off with a tribute exhibition.

Sajet’s leadership comes at a pivotal time, reinforcing MAM’s focus on art’s communal impact and educational potential. Her vision aligns with the museum’s legacy while looking ahead to fresh artistic and educational initiatives.
