**Cuba’s Architectural Beauty Through the Eyes of James Kerwin**
Cuba, featuring enchanting streets adorned with vibrant, timeworn buildings and vintage cars, offers a distinctive weave of history and culture. Kerwin’s exploration of neglected and historical structures began in 2013 when he started to investigate overlooked places in the UK. “Investigating abandoned factories and heritage sites back in the UK revealed to me how much history lies hidden in plain sight,” he stated. Since then, his travels worldwide have led him to architectural scenes from various time periods, documenting the tales and textures of history before they vanish into obscurity.
Devoting 28 days to wandering the Cuban terrain, Kerwin aimed to chronicle the most fascinating forgotten sites. “Cuba possesses a distinct ambiance,” he noted. Numerous structures remain untouched by contemporary redevelopment, infused with history and vibrancy. Havana and smaller locales like Cienfuegos and Trinidad, where architecture and everyday life uniquely converge, became the backdrop for Kerwin’s discoveries.
In Cienfuegos, Kerwin shared one of his most unforgettable experiences—capturing images within a once-stately palace. An abandoned seaside spa complex, where nature gradually reclaims the space, also emerged as a significant moment. The streets of Havana, characterized by the blend of vintage cars, lively exteriors, and weathered paint, offered Kerwin some of his most memorable shots.
Kerwin’s journey extended beyond personal satisfaction, creating pathways for future opportunities. He intends to return to Cuba in February to co-guide photography tours, providing others the opportunity to experience the enchanting charm he documented. His “Time Suspended” series stands as a touching tribute to the grace and historical depth of Cuba, showcasing grand spiral staircases, marble surfaces, and detailed windows that narrate the stories woven into each structure’s essence.
