Cancer Survivor Covers Strangers’ Parking Fees at Hospital Clinic to Commemorate Her Birthday
Cancer Survivor Marks 63rd Birthday by Covering Hospital Parking Fees
For her 63rd birthday, cancer survivor Krystyna Locke decided to give back to her community rather than focus solely on herself. A two-decade fight with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma has provided her with firsthand insight into how rapidly treatment expenses, including parking charges, can accumulate. In a heartwarming act, she opted to pay for parking fees for visitors at the London Health Sciences Centre in Canada.
Locke received her diagnosis in 2004 and has been visiting the cancer clinic every six months. Her health deteriorated in 2023, necessitating more aggressive treatment and regular visits. Over these years, she has keenly noticed the financial challenges faced by patients, particularly the steep parking costs that are frequently ignored.
Locke states on her fundraising campaign page that she recognizes the tough decisions patients must make between small comforts like coffee and parking expenses. Having triumphed over cancer, she now seeks to lighten this specific load for others.
On a Tuesday in August, Locke handed out parking vouchers at the London Health Sciences Centre. Her generous act was met with appreciation, hugs, and even tears from those who benefited. She said, “Some people need to come in daily for treatment, and parking can add to their stress. I wanted to bring some joy to their day.”
Alongside her individual efforts, Locke has also started a fund through the London Health Sciences Foundation, which has already raised over $5,200. She intends to carry on this tradition yearly on her birthday. John H. MacFarlane, president and CEO of LHSF, praised her initiative, calling it a significant reminder of how personal experiences can inspire impactful change.
