Borusan Contemporary Exhibition: Edward Burtynsky’s Shifting Topography

Borusan Contemporary is proud to present “Edward Burtynsky: Shifting Topography,” the Canadian photographer’s first major solo exhibition in Türkiye. Curated by Marcus Schubert, this comprehensive showcasing features new work alongside selections from Burtynsky’s extensive portfolio spanning 30 years.

Burtynsky is renowned for his photographs that explore the intricate balance between nature and human industry. With over four decades of experience, his works transcend mere documentation, highlighting the ongoing dialogue between humanity and the earth.

Each floor of the exhibition, sponsored by the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, introduces a distinct theme. “Erosion” features new images from Burtynsky’s journeys through central Anatolia and the Mediterranean. “Water and Salt” investigates water and salt’s impact on both environment and culture, illustrated by stark visuals of India’s Stepwells and Chile’s Atacama Desert’s lithium brine fields. “African Studies” delves into the significant changes faced by Sub-Saharan regions due to human actions.

Returning to Burtynsky’s roots, the “Nature” section enriches his early landscape works with his extensive career insights. “Quarries” highlights signature pieces from his mid-career, examining these embodiments of negative architecture. “Berezniki Mine” challenges perceptions of mines as mere sites, proposing them as metaphors for transformation. Lastly, “Oil” contemplates this vital fuel’s historical role, paralleling industrial achievements with the pressing issue of climate change.

Housed in Istanbul’s historic Haunted Mansion, Borusan Contemporary is dedicated to contemporary art, offering a dynamic array of exhibitions, events, and educational endeavors drawn from its art collection. Operating since 2011, Borusan fosters innovation through commissioning and acquiring new works and publications.
