Chic Table Lamp Crafted from Reused Tokyo Train Components

London-based design firm Akasaki & Vanhuyse is celebrated for its creative implementation of recycled materials. They have recently introduced the WA table lamp, made from resin strap handles that were formerly utilized on the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line 8500 series trains, which were retired in January 2023. This initiative emphasizes their dedication to sustainability, employing around 1,400 salvaged handles to create a limited run of 150 exceptional lamps.

Standing just under 8 inches tall and weighing 2.65 pounds, the WA lamp showcases nine intricately arranged rings. These rings are placed with gentle gaps, allowing soft light to permeate, providing both practical use and visual charm. The design is bolstered by mirrored, rust-resistant stainless steel legs, which improve its longevity and modern look.

Each WA lamp is uniquely individual, honoring the heritage of Tokyo’s railway history. The resin rings have undergone sandblasting to eliminate the shiny finish, unveiling a subtle matte texture. This technique highlights the natural scratches and dents accumulated over time, resulting in a distinct crackle appearance for each item.
