Rajesh Kumar Sharma is reshaping the concepts of education and community service in New Delhi with his innovative open-air classroom, the “Free School of Under the Bridge.” Distanced from the limitations of conventional schooling, this educational haven emerged from Sharma’s compassion and determination to impact the lives of underprivileged children.
Sharma’s childhood aspirations of becoming an engineer were hindered by financial difficulties, sparking a passion to ensure that similar obstacles do not stifle the dreams of others. While working at a construction site, he observed the children of fellow laborers spending their days without purpose. He recognized that his assistance could go beyond trivial acts like providing sweets and clothing. Consequently, in 2006, he established a learning environment beneath the pillars of an elevated bridge, gradually evolving it into a school that now accommodates nearly 300 pupils.
The school’s atypical environment boasts blackboards painted on walls, with students seated on carpets or the ground, suitable for children ranging from primary to secondary education. Despite the informal setting, the influence of education here is significant. Sharma, supported by three volunteer instructors, sidesteps stringent attendance requirements and fosters a space where children can freely participate in sessions tailored to their individual needs.
Sharma’s commitment goes beyond instructing essential subjects like mathematics, science, and languages. He assists in enrolling students in government schools, where they receive free educational materials and meals. Furthermore, he navigates bureaucratic obstacles, helping undocumented migrant children secure school enrollment documents and negotiating with parents who depend on their children’s earnings.
In spite of widespread recognition, Sharma is hesitant about formalizing his initiatives into an NGO, partly to avoid the complexities and scrutiny that could disrupt his work from the government’s notice. To uphold operational integrity without legal complications, he accepts only practical donations, such as educational supplies and fundamental necessities.
