Artist Constructs Grand Sand Artwork Commemorating Love in Unspoiled Archipelago

David Popa, a creative visionary celebrated for his transient earthwork creations, has recently finished an impressive piece named “Held” on the sandy coast of a small archipelago near Nordskot in northern Norway. Following his acclaimed project in Iceland, Popa journeyed through Scandinavia, which led him to this fresh endeavor using loose beach sand—an unconventional medium for him.

“Held” serves as a poignant homage to love, illustrated through intertwining figures that Popa etched in the sand with natural elements like chalk and charcoal. The setting of gray stones, withering grass, and azure waters provides an organic backdrop that enhances the artwork. For Popa, selecting the ideal location entails discovering a landscape that resonates with the envisioned piece, making it a fundamental aspect of his creative journey.

Popa embraces the fleeting nature of his art. Instead of preserving his creations physically, he perceives its evanescent quality as a reflection of life’s transient and ever-evolving essence. This outlook encourages spectators to value his art in the present, aware that its existence is temporary.

The theme of “Held” strikes a deep chord with Popa, who articulates love as a potent sentiment shaped by the notion of impermanence. His depiction of love, reminiscent of the ocean’s cycles, implies that even brief moments of love are immensely valuable. Popa’s personal bond with the ocean significantly influences the piece, aiming to evoke the feeling of a deeper love.

Limited-edition prints of “Held” will be available from November 13-17, 2025, with early access on November 12, through Popa’s online shop.
