Jean-Michel Basquiat Estate Unveils Exclusive Limited-Edition Screenprints Release

On November 5, Pace Prints will unveil a fresh collection of limited-edition screenprints by Jean-Michel Basquiat, in collaboration with the artist’s estate and Flatiron Editions. Limited to a series of 60, these screenprints replicate Basquiat’s renowned piece on paper, King Alphonso, created between 1982-83, approximately five years prior to his passing in 1988.

Like much of Basquiat’s body of work, King Alphonso features several recurring themes, including a grand, three-pronged crown and schematic abstractions. Central to the piece is a face, displaying a puzzled, if not unsettling, expression. Alongside crowns and abstract icons, human heads were an important inspiration for Basquiat, who frequently depicted these figures with threatening smiles and expressive linework. These tendencies are vividly present in King Alphonso, which also employs acrylic and charcoal, resulting in an illustrative, richly textured surface.

Regarding its title, King Alphonso alludes to King Alfonso XIII, a Spanish ruler known as “El Africano” during his reign from 1886 to 1931. While in command, Alfonso XIII promoted so-called “Africanist” perspectives, which advocated for Spanish presence and colonization throughout the African continent following the loss of lands during the Spanish-American War. This particular reference further highlights Basquiat’s lasting fascination with themes such as cultural heritage and racial identity throughout his work.

“Basquiat invokes this contentious monarch to examine his ongoing themes of race, power, and identity within a historical framework,” Pace Prints elaborates. “By expertly placing his crown atop the King’s head, Basquiat connects himself with King Alphonso, shaping his own historical legacy while simultaneously revealing his extensive historical knowledge and stylistic excellence.”

Importantly, the King Alphonso screenprints will be stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist’s sisters and managers of his estate. The prints will be available solely through Pace Prints starting on November 5, 2025, at 11 a.m. EDT.
