Support Emerging Photographers: Join Light Work’s Inaugural Holiday Market

Light Work, an artist-run non-profit organization, has been a steadfast supporter of emerging and under-recognized artists in the field of photography since 1973. To continue its mission and raise funds, Light Work presents the First Annual Holiday Market, offering a unique shopping experience with an array of signed photo books, limited-edition prints, and exclusive art objects. These items are generously contributed by artists involved in Light Work’s residency and exhibition programs, as well as special collaborators and friends.

For over 50 years, Light Work has been a champion for photographers and visual artists globally. The proceeds from this year’s sale are vital to sustain programs that include the Artist-in-Residence Program, publications, exhibitions, and the community-access lab. This initiative is even more critical following a significant funding cut from the NEA, making each purchase impactful in maintaining the organization’s creative haven in Syracuse, New York.

Art enthusiasts and supporters are encouraged to shop promptly, as quantities of these rare items are limited. The holiday market not only benefits collectors with one-of-a-kind art but also contributes significantly to nurturing the next generation of artists.

Light Work has facilitated participation for over 400 artists from across the United States and over 15 countries in its acclaimed Artist-in-Residence Program. It has also brought to publication more than 200 issues of Contact Sheet, a long-standing photography publication that has been highlighting contemporary photographers since 1977.

Beyond residencies and publications, Light Work supports artists through special book projects, local grants for lens-based talent in Central New York, and over 400 exhibitions. Over 25,000 artists, students, and patrons have benefited from Light Work’s advanced photo and digital lab facilities to produce museum-quality art.

The extensive Light Work Collection includes more than 4,000 photographs and unique objects, featuring contributions from notable artists such as Cindy Sherman, Carrie Mae Weems, and Dawoud Bey, and is accessible online for greater visibility and engagement.

Additionally, Light Work’s Urban Video Project (UVP) in collaboration with the Everson Museum of Art and Onondaga County, showcases outdoor architectural projections of film and moving image arts, adding to Central New York’s rich history in video art by utilizing advanced technology to bring high-caliber work to the public in Syracuse, New York.
