The Intermedia and Digital Arts (IMDA) MFA program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), offers an exciting opportunity for interdisciplinary artists aiming to innovate or expand their practice. This three-year, 60-credit graduate program provides private studios located within Baltimore’s vibrant art community. The faculty consists of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists, filmmakers, designers, and scholars who maintain active exhibition and publication records. The program’s multidisciplinary approach is supported by one-on-one feedback from world-renowned visiting artists and includes independent teaching opportunities, professional exhibition venues, and specialized fabrication, media, and physical computing labs.

UMBC stands among the top-ranked R1 research universities, known for its inclusive culture and broad interdisciplinary opportunities. Students benefit from access to extensive research centers. The university offers graduate assistantships that encompass full tuition remission, health insurance, stipends, and other merit-based financial support. Specially, for 2026 applicants, a special Dean’s award is available, providing full funding along with summer fellowship opportunities.

IMDA caters to a diverse array of interdisciplinary creative practices, which include socially-engaged, community-based, interactive, and studio-based artworks using both cutting-edge and traditional methods and technologies. Its alumni have showcased work at prestigious global venues, secured significant grants and residency awards, and hold academic positions at internationally respected art academies and universities.

The program’s visiting artists’ roster includes celebrated names like Janine Antoni, Zoe Beloff, Lynda Berry, Paul Chan, Annica Cupetelli and Cristobal Mendoza, Paul DeMarinis, Tony Dove, Hasan Elahi, Karen Finley, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Barbara Hammer, Nina Katchadourian, Alison Knowles, Mark Tribe, Guerrilla Girls, William Pope.L, Michael Rakowitz, David Rokeby, Paul Rucker, Frances Torres, and many others.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to register for the IMDA Online Info Session scheduled for Friday, November 21, from 3–4pm EST. Applications should be submitted by February 1, 2026.
