Astronaut Jonny Kim Finishes 245-Day Expedition on International Space Station and Comes Back to Earth

Astronaut Jonny Kim has returned to Earth after completing a 245-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Kim, together with Russian cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky, successfully landed in Kazakhstan before proceeding to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

During his time as an Expedition 72/73 flight engineer, Kim carried out numerous experiments with significance for Earth sciences and future space exploration, particularly relating to NASA’s Artemis initiative designed to send humans to Mars. His research encompassed the effects of microgravity on health, cultivating plants without photosynthesis, encoding data with DNA, examining protein fluids, and studying bone density loss.

Kim’s experience as a naval aviator, flight surgeon, and former NAVY SEAL made him an exceptional candidate for the astronaut class of 2017, selected from over 18,300 applicants. Reflecting on his mission, Kim highlighted the significance of collaboration over scientific accomplishments.

After his mission, Kim shared updates on social media, mentioning a particularly touching reunion with his pets, including a newly adopted family dog. Kim’s journey illustrates the fusion of scientific inquiry and human experience. Stay updated with his continuing adventures through his Instagram.
