Young Pianist Overwhelmed by Emotion While Performing 200-Year-Old Chopin Prelude

Music possesses an unparalleled ability to resonate with our souls. It can provide solace and release, or captivate us with its elegance. While these emotions are often experienced by listeners, musicians and performers also deeply feel its impact. In fact, their connection may be even more profound. Japanese pianist Yumeka Nakagawa exemplifies this, as a video of her being swept away by emotion during a performance of a Chopin piece has captured attention globally.

This moment occurred at the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, organized by The Fryderyk Chopin Institute within the Warsaw Philharmonic Concert Hall. While performing Chopin’s cycle of 24 Preludes, Op. 28, Nakagawa skillfully and soulfully plays the piano. Even though it’s easy to be mesmerized by her technical prowess, what is most striking is her emotional connection with the music, allowing herself to feel and be affected while performing.

Midway through the recital, Nakagawa tackles the Prelude, Op. 28, No. 15, known as “Raindrop,” and what had been an enchanting, heartfelt exhibition evolves into something deeply human, seldom witnessed in such an earnest atmosphere. The 24-year-old pianist is brought to tears, navigating through the emotions that the prelude elicits within her. This isn’t an attempt to conceal her feelings; rather, Nakagawa allows the music to resonate through her entire being, completely immersing herself in it.

This moment stands as a testament to the enduring nature of music. Although the preludes are nearly 200 years old, they remain beautiful, intricate, and truly timeless masterpieces capable of connecting the past to the present. This exemplifies how music serves as a universal language, requiring no words to engage anyone who might be listening.

In the end, Nakagawa did not clinch the competition; Eric Lu from the United States was the victor while she was eliminated in the second round. However, her deeply moving performance has inspired countless individuals to perceive classical music in a fresh light—one that illustrates how it can be a holistic experience. One might argue that the pianist may not have triumphed in this specific competition, but in a broader sense, she achieved something greater.
