New Yorker Carries Shelter Dogs on His Back to Increase Adoption Rates

Bryan Reisberg’s Creative Method for Dog Adoption in NYC

In a touching effort to address the challenge of pet overpopulation, filmmaker Bryan Reisberg has embraced an innovative strategy to assist homeless dogs throughout New York City. Motivated by his experiences carrying his own corgi, Maxine, around the city and the encouraging responses he received, Reisberg opted to provide similar outings for adoptable dogs from local shelters. He takes these pups on what he refers to as the “Best Day Ever,” granting them an opportunity to savor the sights and sounds of New York City while being showcased for potential adopters.

According to Best Friends Sanctuary, an astounding 4.8 million homeless dogs and cats entered shelters across the United States in 2024. With such a high number of pets in need of homes, Reisberg’s method of transporting shelter dogs in a backpack marked “Adopt Me” captures attention on the streets of New York. Weekly, Reisberg chooses a dog from a Best Friends Sanctuary partner shelter, providing them with their inaugural journey through the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Typically, a day for these adventurous pups may involve rides on the subway, trips to Central Park or Times Square, shopping for toys, and relishing a pup cup.

Sharing these escapades on social media has emerged as an effective means of engaging individuals who might be interested in adoption. Each dog’s personality and experience are described in the captions of the videos, showcasing whether they enjoyed the adventure and their behavior. The outcomes are remarkable: 10 out of the first 11 dogs highlighted on Reisberg’s account have found new homes. His contributions have been acknowledged by Julie Castle, CEO of Best Friends Sanctuary, for leading to an increase of around 100 more adoptions compared to the prior year.

Reisberg regards the act of presenting these dogs to a wider audience as a fulfilling pursuit, enhancing their lives and those of their new families. As he continues to produce content that not only entertains but also profoundly influences the lives of shelter dogs, more individuals are discovering the joy these animals can add to their lives.
