Announcing the Recipient of the Guggenheim’s Inaugural $50,000 Visual Arts Prize

Catherine Telford Keogh is the first recipient of the Jack Galef Visual Arts Award, a new honor created by the Guggenheim and supported by the Jack Galef Estate. This award, which will be given every two years, acknowledges contemporary artists of remarkable skill and provides them with $50,000. Keogh, who is based in Brooklyn, is recognized for her interdisciplinary creations that investigate themes such as value, waste, and commodification. Her distinguished works include “Cradlers,” which incorporates fossiliferous limestone obtained from Facebook Marketplace, and “Carriers (Gravity-Fed),” which showcases sediment collected from Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal. In her artwork, Keogh engages thoroughly with materiality and time, frequently allowing her creative process to progress at its own rhythm. The Jack Galef Visual Arts Award is designed to assist artists in advancing their practice, reflecting Jack Galef’s legacy of fostering talent in the arts.
