Representatives of Pride Flag’s Creator File Lawsuit Against Trump Administration

**Lawsuits Challenge Trump Administration’s National Park Policies on Historical Content**

On February 17, two federal lawsuits were filed to contest the Trump administration’s actions that allegedly seek to obscure U.S. history at national park sites. The administration’s directive to remove the rainbow Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument has sparked a legal challenge from the Gilbert Baker Foundation and others in Manhattan. Meanwhile, a Massachusetts court sees a coalition of educational and advocacy groups filing against the dismantling of exhibitions across National Park Service (NPS) sites.

The lawsuits argue that the Department of the Interior (DOI), under Trump’s orders, is attempting to “erase” American history without proper authority. Last week, NPS officials removed the Pride flag from Christopher Park citing flag display rules, a move the Gilbert Baker Foundation deems a deliberate misinterpretation. The foundation highlights the historical importance of the Pride flag, created by Gilbert Baker in 1978, in commemorating the LGBT civil rights movement.

The Massachusetts lawsuit, involving six plaintiffs including the National Parks Conservation Association, targets the DOI’s reduction of educational displays on topics like climate change and segregation. Trump’s executive order “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History” allegedly prioritizes emphasizing American greatness while reducing narratives on controversial aspects of history. Accusations include removal of information at sites like the Grand Canyon and Teton National Parks.

Responding to the litigation, a DOI spokesperson criticized the political leanings of one plaintiff group. The plaintiffs seek restoration of historical displays and restraint on further alterations, affirming that visitors deserve comprehensive and unbiased park interpretations.
