“Merging Traditional Craft Practices with New Media at the Museum of Craft and Design”

**Video Craft: Bridging Craft and Digital Media**

Currently on view at San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Design, the exhibition “Video Craft” delves into the intersection of traditional craft media and emerging film technologies. Running through August 16, 2026, the showcase highlights the parallels between video, film, and traditional crafts such as ceramics, textiles, and glass. Historically overlooked in new media discussions, these crafts are now gaining recognition for their contributions to media art.

“Video Craft” is divided into three thematic categories: Encoding, Looping, and Sampling. Encoding involves the transformation of ideas between mediums, inducing structural changes. Looping explores material connections with an emphasis on physicality, akin to the repetitive act in knitting. Sampling involves sourcing and reconfiguring patterns from material histories within a video context.

Curated by Sarah Mills, PhD, and Ariel Zaccheo, the exhibit features 19 artists, from video pioneers like Beryl Korot to modern digital artists such as Sabrina Gschwandtner. This collection demonstrates the synergy between traditional crafts and the transient nature of digital screens.

Participating artists include Danielle Andress, Sydney Cash, Gregory Climer, William Cobbing, and others. For more details, visit [sfmcd.org](https://bit.ly/4b1xl8E?ref=hyperallergic.com).
