Laura Phipps Appointed Director of Gochman Collection of Indigenous Art

Laura Phipps, former associate curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, has been appointed as the new director of the Gochman Family Collection (GFC). This announcement coincides with the organization’s plans to establish a permanent exhibition space in the Hudson River Valley, scheduled to open this fall. The GFC, co-founded in 2021 by Becky Gochman and Zach Feuer, is known for its focus on contemporary Indigenous art, featuring works by artists like Cara Romero and Raven Halfmoon. With a collection of approximately 750 pieces, the GFC aims to enhance public accessibility through its new space in Katonah, Westchester County. This space will offer flexible opportunities for showcasing large-scale works and facilitate community engagement. Under Phipps’s leadership, the GFC will continue to emphasize adaptability and artist support, aligning with the mission and governance methods of the Forge Project, a Native-led arts nonprofit associated with the collection.
