Report Reveals 60% of Sudan’s National Museum Looted
The destruction of cultural heritage in Sudan’s civil war poses a grave threat to the nation’s history and identity. Beyond the tragic loss of human life and massive displacement, the looting and destruction of cultural artifacts have significantly distorted Sudan’s past and present. Recently, more than 60% of the Sudan National Museum’s holdings were reported looted during RSF’s control over Khartoum. While the museum structure remains, other sites like the Nyala Museum were repurposed for military uses, and the Sultan Ali Dinar Palace was destroyed. Efforts are ongoing to recover and document stolen artifacts, such as the establishment of a virtual museum and a database of looted items. Despite challenges, there remains a committed team in Sudan striving to restore and preserve what remains, reflecting a deep commitment to safeguarding Sudan’s rich cultural heritage for future generations.
