Personalized Wooden Music Cabinet for Playing Vinyl Records and Cassette Tapes

Today, your favorite tunes are merely a few taps away. However, in the past, individuals needed large devices, in addition to physical copies of the albums or songs they wished to enjoy. This necessitated the availability of specific equipment capable of playing them, along with space for one’s music collection. Inspired by these vintage furniture items from the 70s and 80s, audiovisual artist and woodworker Love Hultén crafted his own interpretation of a music-playing machine that also serves as a music storage stand.

Operating from his workshop in Gothenburg, Sweden, Hultén is recognized for his unique retro-futuristic style. He typically constructs custom pieces commissioned as per request. On this occasion, a client requested that he develop his version of the Philips Rosita Commander Luxus from 1970, a console-like device designed to play both vinyl records and cassette tapes within the same unit.

Hultén’s rendition possesses a classic and warm aesthetic, featuring a wooden frame that is absent in the original design. The most significant alteration is that the turntable has been positioned vertically for a refreshed appearance. In this reimagining, the lower section is devoted to cassettes, which includes the player along with slots for storing a dozen tapes. The original 1970 model had the record player and tape deck situated at the bottom of the device, while the sound controls were oriented upright.

A particularly clever enhancement is the hidden storage compartment for 10 to 12 records on the upper part of the machine, which can be accessed by lifting a concealed wooden lid. Another ingenious feature is its tall metallic stand, which transforms it into an individual piece of furniture, rather than just an appliance intended for placement on a countertop or table.

While it appears as though it came directly from a museum, this item would undoubtedly thrill any music enthusiasts who value physical formats. Music may now be easily accessible anywhere, at any time, but there’s an undeniable allure in taking a moment to browse through your own records and hit play.
