Designer Revamps Traditional Ruler With Creative Arched Measurements
Simple yet ingenious, the ruler stands as one of those essential tools we’ve all utilized. Without it, our environment would be far less precise and considerably less accurate, yet this steadfast accuracy allows little space for creativity and spontaneity. Drawing inspiration from this concept, product designer Tomas Kral re-envisions the commonplace tool with the Way ruler.
The Way ruler—crafted from anodized aluminum—boasts clear, practical markings along its edge, similar to a conventional ruler. However, at each centimeter mark, the lines begin to exhibit a life of their own, winding and looping, with the numbers appearing at the conclusion of these paths instead of at the edge.
Influenced by journeying and exploration, Kral designed the ruler to make the act of measuring more playful and interactive. Instead of immediately glancing at a number at the edge, you are encouraged to pause and trace the winding lines with your gaze until you arrive at the final figure.
Kral’s clever design implies that the path to achieving a result isn’t always straightforward.
