Tonika Lewis Johnson: Understanding Segregation and Strategies for Disruption
On April 15, join Hyperallergic for an engaging online event featuring a dialogue between social justice artist and MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Tonika Lewis Johnson and Hyperallergic’s Senior Editor, Valentina Di Liscia. This event, accessible for free to Hyperallergic paid members, will provide a platform for Johnson to discuss her influential work, particularly her “Folded Map Project.” This project connects residents from Chicago’s racially divided North and South sides based on mirror addresses, fostering dialogue about segregation. The session will begin with live readings from her 2024 book, “Don’t Go: Stories of Segregation and How to Disrupt It,” encouraging participants to challenge entrenched stereotypes. Tonika Lewis Johnson, a dedicated artist and advocate from Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, uses her diverse artistic methodologies to illuminate and address the realities of racial segregation, leveraging community collaboration to inspire change.
