Father and Daughter Artists Create Extraordinary Photorealistic Charcoal Portraits of Animals

Rob and Georgia Harris have turned their artistic endeavors into a family venture. This father-daughter artistic pair produces large-scale charcoal drawings that showcase animals in remarkable detail. Their collaboration began when Georgia was merely 11 years old, and they have since collaborated on over 20 significant pieces. Aside from the joy of creating alongside a family member, their partnership has facilitated the development of a mutual visual language in ways it could not have achieved individually.

From afar, Rob and Georgia’s works resemble photographs. Yet, when examined closely, the traces of the artists’ hands become evident, manifested on paper at museum scale. The deep black of the charcoal is skillfully drawn and shaped with meticulous brushwork, with the intricate details illustrated using compressed charcoal pencil. To achieve the illusionistic effect, both artists must exercise precision and restraint in every element of their drawings.

Their latest series, named Wild Hearts, delves into the theme of connection through form. “Animal families are depicted in close quarters, bodies intertwining in compositions that subtly transform into heart-like shapes,” they share with My Modern Met. “The series focuses less on wildlife and more on the essence of protecting something, of holding it dear.” Rob and Georgia do not impose the heart shape that arises in each composition. “It emerges from the natural positioning of the animals, with protection manifesting as form.”

Collaborative work isn’t always simple, but being receptive to the creative flow with another person can reveal new perspectives. This is exactly what occurred for Rob and Georgia. “What Georgia contributes isn’t merely another hand on the paper,” Rob notes. “It’s an alternative way of perceiving. The artwork is genuinely different thanks to her.” Georgia shares the sentiment, stating, “We don’t always agree on the appearance of something. However, that’s usually when it becomes most intriguing.”
