Artist Produces Artwork as a Plea to Safeguard the Planet
In her most recent collection, artist Ekaterina Sky reinterprets painting as a deeply personal form of expression rather than mere visual depiction. For Sky, each artwork serves as both a moment of reflection and an invitation for action. Anchored in the belief that art can forge a connection between humanity and nature, her evolving Prayer for the Earth series intertwines spirituality, ecological awareness, and community involvement. For Sky, the process of painting begins with intent rather than image. The Los Angeles-based artist, whose work investigates the interplay between humanity, spirituality, and the environment, views her Prayer for the Earth series as both a visual portrayal and a devotional practice. “For me, the work literally starts with a prayer,” Sky shares with My Modern Met. “Once I embraced that aspect of myself, everything transformed. My work transcended mere visuals and evolved into a prayer for the world.” This transformation coincided with an increasing urgency. As environmental issues grew more pressing, Sky searched for a means to bring people together across various cultures and belief systems. This quest led to a text created during a restless night—what she refers to as a prayer that “flowed through” her instead of being crafted by her. She subsequently shared it with spiritual leaders from diverse traditions, honing it into a message rooted in shared accountability.
That text now serves as the foundation for Prayer for the Earth, an ongoing series of watercolor and gold leaf pieces that manifest a universal prayer visually. Each artwork features the written prayer, encased beneath layers of gold. The materials hold significant meaning: gold represents honor and durability, embedding intention directly within the artwork’s framework.
Sky broadens this methodology through community engagement. Many of her creations develop in collaborative settings, where participants add their written intentions, which are then incorporated into the artwork’s surface. These actions transform each piece into what the artist defines as “a vessel for collective intention,” shifting authorship from the sole creator to the collective.
This participatory aspect reimagines the role of the artwork. Instead of merely being an object for observation, each piece evolves into a space for contemplation—inviting tranquility, introspection, and heightened awareness of environmental guardianship.
