“Collective Showcase Emphasizes the Strength of Fabric Art by 15 Prominent Artists”
Textile art boasts an extensive history, having been present in various forms for millennia. However, it is only in recent times that it has begun to receive the acknowledgment it merits. Frequently perceived through a gendered lens as “women’s work”—and thus considered less significant—modern art is progressing to highlight the creativity and allure of this category. This is reflected in *Textile Art Redefined*, currently exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
The collective exhibition comprises 15 artists hailing from the UK and across the globe: Ian Berry, Caroline Burgess, Chiachio and Giannone, Signe Emdal, Kaffe Fassett, Anne von Freyburg, Sara Impey, Deniz Kurdak, Kenny Nguyen, Simone Pheulpin, Benjamin Shine, Jakkai Siributr, Jenni Dutton, and Magda Sayeg.
Helen Adams curated *Textile Art Redefined* inspired by her book, *Textile Fine Art*. Her choices embrace a diverse array of techniques, including embroidery, quilting, weaving, knitting, and crochet. Collectively, these methods display the potential of simple materials such as fabric, needles, and thread. Certain pieces, such as Fassett’s *Geometric Sampler*, produce captivating three-dimensional visuals on a flat canvas, offering a modern interpretation of the traditional textile sampler.
Other works adopt an immersive stance, as demonstrated in Berry’s *Secret Garden*. The installation features flowers and vines cascading from the ceiling, all created from repurposed denim jeans. Accompanying Berry’s creation is a site-specific work by Sayeg that reflects her legacy as a trailblazer in yarn bombing and enveloping the environment in handcrafted items.
Vibrant color, rich texture, and a deep appreciation for materials are prominently showcased in *Textile Art Redefined*. The exhibition is open at the Saatchi Gallery until May 10, 2026.
