The “Sturgeon Moon” derives its name from the large lake sturgeon fish that are abundant in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Throughout August and early September, these indigenous freshwater fish were historically essential for the diet of Native American tribes within the area.
For an optimal viewing experience, consider watching the full Sturgeon Moon at moonrise on August 8, as it rises above the eastern horizon in the Northern Hemisphere. This moment also offers the opportunity to experience the “moon illusion,” where the moon seems larger near the horizon. Although it isn’t categorized as a supermoon, the Sturgeon Moon is somewhat closer to Earth compared to an average full moon, yielding a slightly larger and brighter appearance.
If you happen to overlook the Sturgeon Moon, the Perseids meteor shower peaks on the evening of August 12-13 in the Northern Hemisphere, revealing up to 100 “shooting stars” each hour.
