“Within the Crafting of the Most Massive Art Vehicle at Burning Man 2025: An Expedition in the Desert [Interview]”
Burning Man is an extraordinary gathering of creativity, innovation, and community, transforming the Black Rock Desert in northwestern Nevada into Black Rock City for a duration of nine days. It is a realm where artistic installations and performances flourish, and in 2025, the Long Feng art car emerged as a remarkable moving stage. This project, led by veteran Burners Audrey Lo and Weixing Chen, was the largest art car on the playa. Featuring a base reminiscent of a semi-truck, it included a grand metal-grate arch for gatherings and DJ booths, topped with a lotus platform for performers.
The design of Long Feng connects Eastern and Western cultures, drawing inspiration from the dragon and phoenix, and is illuminated by real fire at night. Motifs of dragons and phoenixes represent this blend, coupled with technologies like AI and robotics to create an interactive experience. Co-founder Audrey Lo likened the car’s versatility to that of a contortionist, adapting to host various performances.
At the heart of Burning Man lies community, and Long Feng embraces shared narratives across cultures. The project was born from the founders’ love story, signifying unity and collaboration among diverse cultures. Built with contributions from artists across the globe, Long Feng stands as a testament to collective creativity.
Standing 34 feet tall and 78 feet long, Long Feng was constructed using steel, aluminum, and silk elements, resulting in a dynamic, glimmering visual effect. It boasts a Funktion-One sound system that provides a concert-grade experience. The vehicle’s design fuses ancient wisdom with forward-thinking visions, representing a connection between the past and future through its performances.
Upon its debut, Long Feng’s live shows captivated crowds, featuring a variety of acts such as Chinese ribbon dancers and contortionists, enriching the overall spectacle. Its presence brought vital representation to Burning Man, enhancing the festival’s cultural fabric.
As they look ahead to Burning Man 2026, the Long Feng team intends to persist in celebrating underrepresented cultures, fostering environments for art and community to flourish. Their ongoing mission guarantees that the art car will continue to be a vibrant and unifying element on the playa.
