Energy exists all around us, though it isn’t always apparent. Artist Ivan Pokidyshev brings human warmth and emotion to light through his ethereal artworks. His pieces draw inspiration from thermography and Transmitted Infrared Photography (IRT), a method that utilizes infrared light to unveil concealed structures and patterns under aged paintings.

Pokidyshev’s approach blends science and art, examining the unseen forces of light and warmth that connect us. Pokidyshev shares with My Modern Met, “I aspire to create my own visual poetry. The poetry of love and hope—the poetry of light and warmth.”

The artist’s Light and Warmth initiative, which began in 2018, illustrates human connection by portraying heat as a radiant glow stemming from his subjects. Pokidyshev characterizes human warmth as “essential energy overflowing from one figure to another, expansively erupting, or conversely, fading in the presence of emptiness and chill.”

As his work progressed, Pokidyshev shifted his emphasis from the tangible contrast between heat and cold to the evocative strength of light itself. He now perceives light not merely as a visual instrument, but as a symbolic and emotional dialect. “I construct my compositions around two contrasting principles,” the artist articulates, “the glow that shines from within a person and the dark void that envelops them.”

From a newborn radiating intense warmth to a couple bathed in red and pink just before their kiss, each of Pokidyshev’s paintings emanates the living spirit of what it means to be human.
