
More than $1.5 Million Collected in Community Backing for Ahmed al-Ahmed, Bondi Beach Champion

A surge of sorrow and unity has enveloped Australia and the globe following the tragic shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, December 14. Amidst the chaos fueled by hatred, one bystander displayed remarkable bravery, risking his own life to safeguard others celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah.
Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 43-year-old owner of a fruit shop and father of two from Sutherland, has earned international accolades for his valiant efforts. A now-famous video shows him courageously seizing one of the assailants from behind and neutralizing him. After taking the weapon from the assailant, al-Ahmed aimed it at the perpetrator, who promptly retreated and departed the area. Ahmed sustained two gunshot wounds during the struggle and is currently recovering in the hospital.
<pMotivated by al-Ahmed's courage, a GoFundMe initiative was established to assist him and his family. Organizers Car Hub Australia and Zachery Dereniowski launched the fundraiser with an initial contribution of AU$50,000 (roughly US$33,000), and within merely one day, it soared to an astonishing AU$2,320,257 (about US$1,540,152). The organizers expressed, “This GoFundMe has been initiated to convey our appreciation and support for someone who exhibited remarkable courage when it was most needed.”
Al-Ahmed is an Australian Muslim of Syrian descent, originally hailing from the village of al-Nayrab near Idlib. It is thought he relocated to Australia in 2006 and was having lunch at Bondi Beach at the time of the shooting. His actions remind us that, during critical moments, humanity can transcend divisions.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns shared a photo on Instagram with al-Ahmed at the hospital, remarking, “Ahmed is a genuine hero. Last night, his extraordinary bravery undoubtedly saved numerous lives when he disarmed a terrorist at great personal risk.”
