France Starts Distributing €2 Coins Commemorating Refurbished Notre-Dame

**New Euro Coins Honor Restoration and Reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris**

The Monnaie de Paris has unveiled an impressive series of special two-euro coins to honor the reopening of the renowned Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in 2024. These coins celebrate the historic structure’s revival following the catastrophic fire in 2019. As one of the most ancient minting institutions, the Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to Notre-Dame’s beloved Gothic facade, which has been restored after the inferno that nearly destroyed its entire wooden framework.

The restoration of Notre-Dame commenced shortly after the fire—an incident that captured global attention and support. Remarkably, firefighters were able to preserve the cathedral’s primary structure, facade, and towers, despite the significant destruction. The elaborate restoration effort, supported by worldwide contributions and the skills of artists, architects, and engineers, resulted in the cathedral’s magnificent reopening more than five years later.

Celebrating this monumental achievement, France has circulated 20 million commemorative €2 coins, featuring the west facade of Notre-Dame with its iconic twin towers and rose window. These coins are inscribed with “Notre-Dame de Paris,” the year 2025, and “RF” for République Française, aiming to inspire national pride and rekindle interest in collecting tangible currency.

For collectors, the Monnaie de Paris also provides these coins in Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) conditions. This release connects with a wider cultural appreciation for craftsmanship and history while marking an important milestone in French heritage.
