Parrot Lost for 4 Years Comes Back to California Speaking Spanish

Animals sometimes adopt peculiar behaviors while we are not around. However, one parrot that went missing returned with something significantly more astonishing: an entirely different language.
Nigel, an African grey parrot owned by British expat Darren Chick in California, disappeared from his residence in 2010 after taking flight unexpectedly. For years, Chick believed his cherished bird was gone forever. Nevertheless, four years later, the loquacious parrot made a comeback in the most unexpected manner. A woman named Julissa Sperling found the bird outside her home after she heard what seemed like someone calling out. Upon investigating, she recognized that the voice came from a parrot resting nearby. After bringing the bird to a veterinarian, a microchip confirmed that the wandering avian was Nigel, finally solving the riddle of his disappearance.
The reunion with his original owner was heartfelt, yet a bit perplexing when Nigel started to talk. The parrot, who previously spoke English with a British accent, was now conversing in Spanish.
While it is still uncertain where exactly Nigel spent those four missing years, it appears likely that he lived with Spanish-speaking caregivers long enough to acquire a completely new array of expressions. African grey parrots are widely regarded as some of the most intelligent birds globally and are renowned for their ability to imitate human speech and adjust to the sounds in their surroundings.
This adaptability is what enables stories like Nigel’s to occur. These birds do not merely echo words; they learn them from their surroundings, often linking language with objects, actions, or people. In certain instances, their cognitive skills have even been compared to those of young children.
The locations that Nigel visited during his four-year journey remain an enigma. However, it is apparent that the wandering parrot did not spend his time quietly sitting in a cage. Instead, he appears to have been engaging in studies abroad.
After being missing for four years, a parrot with a British accent astonished its owner by returning home and speaking Spanish.
