“Recipient of the $100K Rauschenberg Award Announced in Art Movements”

In a series of significant industry news events, the art world has seen shifts and honors this week. Honoring the 100th anniversary of painter and multimedia artist Robert Rauschenberg’s birth, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation has awarded a $100,000 centennial award to four distinguished artists: Senga Nengudi for visual art, David Thomson for performance, Chandra McCormick and Keith Calhoun for photography, and Patricia Spears Jones for writing.

Several notable appointments have taken place in the art community, including Emerson Bowyer becoming the chief curator at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, and Luciano Johnson taking on the role of chief librarian at the Frick Collection. Controversial developments saw Julian Cox stepping down from his position at the Art Gallery of Ontario, following a censorship controversy regarding a Nan Goldin work. Elsewhere, Madeleine Grynsztejn announced her departure from MCA Chicago.

On the international scene, Helen Legg was named artistic director of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and James Taylor-Foster was appointed executive director of Hong Kong’s Para Site. Meanwhile, discussions around Banksy’s identity resurfaced as Reuters suggests the graffiti icon may be Robin Gunningham, now known as David Jones—claims vehemently denied by the artist’s lawyer.

In other significant awards, Trevor Paglen received the 2026 LG Guggenheim Award, and architect Smiljan Radić was belatedly awarded the Pritzker Prize after controversy surrounding the sponsor. With these updates, the art community continues to evolve, marking distinct transitions and accomplishments across various segments.
