Ghanaian Artist Ibrahim Mahama Reportedly Attacked by State Police

Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, who is acclaimed for his installations and large-scale sculptures exploring Ghana’s civil and material society, is considering legal action against his government following an alleged assault by the notorious police force, the Special Operations Team, also known as the “Black Maria.” The incident reportedly occurred on March 21 in Tamale after Eid al-Fitr prayers, where Mahama and several motorists were allegedly assaulted by officers attempting to clear traffic. Mahama lost two teeth and was hospitalized.

The Ghana Police Service has denied involvement, stating in a press release that its Black Maria unit was not present during the incident, as they were removed from the region on March 5. An investigation is being launched. Mahama, during a media conference, expressed intention to pursue legal action to prevent further police brutality by the Black Maria unit, which has faced accusations of using excessive force.

Mahama accused the police leader of misconduct and highlighted the unit’s history of brutal actions. He emphasized the need for justice, drawing attention to the plight of less visible victims. Mahama, well-known for representing Ghana at the 2019 Venice Biennale, uses his art to critique colonial legacies and promote cultural justice. His Red Clay Studio in Tamale aims to make culture accessible, challenging the status quo and advocating for equity.
