“2025 Scottish Nature Photography Awards Celebrate Scotland’s Natural Splendor”
**Dance of the Gnats: Toby Houlton Wins First Place in Scottish Wildlife Behaviour Category**
The Scottish Nature Photography Awards (SNPA) revealed its 2025 champions, honoring the stunning diversity of Scotland’s natural scenery. Among the remarkable images was “Dance of the Gnats” by Toby Houlton, which secured the top spot in the Scottish Wildlife Behaviour category. Houlton, who calls Invergordon home, relocated to Scotland in 2017, fueled by his enthusiasm for nature and wildlife photography. His thoughtful and diligent explorations of local wildlife frequently yield transformative images that illuminate the often ignored facets of Scotland’s fauna.
“Dance of the Gnats,” a snapshot of minuscule insects apparently caught in a mid-air ballet, was taken in the scenic locale of Little Garve, Ross-shire. Houlton snapped this extraordinary photo during a riverside stroll, noticing the gnats playing in the late afternoon sunlight. Employing a slow shutter speed, he converted their ephemeral motions into striking light trails against the dim backdrop of the woods.
Houlton remarked, “My winning photograph was captured at Little Garve in Ross-shire. I had been walking alongside the river during the late afternoon, and there, in areas of dappled sunlight, the gnats were ‘dancing.’ A flash of inspiration led me to realize that using a slow shutter speed would result in wonderful light trails, and the suggestion of the darker woodland behind would offer a sense of place. The rapidity of these tiny dancers allowed for multiple wingbeats to be recorded in the exposure, forming the patterns.”
Judge Niall Irvine commended the image, emphasizing the enchanting patterns formed by the insects’ movements and Houlton’s imaginative technique, noting how the photograph conveys drama and significance.
Houlton’s achievement highlights photography’s ability to uncover the magical beauty and variety of ordinary wildlife, urging viewers to observe their environment with renewed admiration and wonder.
