The “Pinkest Pink” Hue Offered at No Cost to Everyone Except One Person
In 2016, the British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor obtained exclusive rights to utilize Vantablack, effectively hindering other artists from using the world’s “blackest black” pigment. This decision triggered a backlash within the art community, prompting fellow British artist Stuart Semple, the founder of Culture Hustle, to take action.
In retaliation, Semple introduced his own “pinkest pink,” followed by a collection of ultra-matte black pigments, all available to anyone—except Kapoor. Now, commemorating the 10th anniversary of his famed powder pink pigment, Semple is offering it for free, simply stating that “sharing your colors is nice, and art is for everyone.”
When Semple initially launched his Pinkest Pink pigment a decade back, Anish Kapoor somehow procured it. He subsequently posted a provocative image on Instagram, dipping his middle finger into a container of the vibrant pigment. This audacious act only heightened the competition, leading Semple to create his ultra-matte Black 2.0 paint and prohibit Kapoor from acquiring it. He subsequently developed Black 4.0, which he characterizes as “the blackest black paint in the known universe.”
On the Culture Hustle website, both the pink and black product pages bear a humorous disclaimer targeted directly at Kapoor. It states, “By adding this product to your cart you confirm that you are not Anish Kapoor, you are in no way affiliated to Anish Kapoor, you are not purchasing this item on behalf of Anish Kapoor or an associate of Anish Kapoor. To the best of your knowledge, information, and belief this material will not make its way into the hands of Anish Kapoor.”
Currently, the playful dispute continues, but to everyone’s advantage (except Kapoor). Semple is distributing his Pinkest Pink powder paint for free. You only need to cover the postage. “Visible light is powerfully reflected by this high pigment paint to create a strong fluorescent effect,” Semple remarks. “It’s so bright that cameras struggle to capture its intensity!”
Safe to conclude, photos don’t entirely capture its essence, so it’s best experienced in person. Claim your Pinkest Pink for free here.
British artist Stuart Semple is giving away his Pinkest Pink powder paint to mark the pigment’s 10th anniversary.
The hue was created in reaction to Anish Kapoor securing exclusive rights to Vantablack, effectively preventing other artists from accessing the world’s “blackest black” pigment.
Anyone is welcome to obtain their free jar of pink—apart from Kapoor!
