Moby Teams Up with Jacob Lusk for Enchanting “Natural Blues” Show at Coachella
Before Coachella ascended to the pinnacle of trendy music festivals for Gen Z, its roster appeared markedly different. It was once the stage for the most prominent rock and indie acts of the early 2000s, with some innovative electronic and hip-hop artists intermittently featured. This essence seemingly resurfaced at Coachella on Friday night when artist Moby delivered one of the festival’s standout moments with a thrilling rendition of his 2000s classic “Natural Blues.”
The track prominently incorporates samples from “Trouble So Hard” by the late American folk artist Vera Hall. To infuse the Coachella performance with similar depth and vigor, Moby invited singer Jacob Lusk to join him. The artist, a member of the group Gabriels and a fifth-place finisher on the 10th season of American Idol, enriched the vocal segments of the song with his deep, captivating voice. Instead of the original, more subdued version of the piece, Moby opted for the 2019 BLOND:ISH remix of “Natural Blues,” transforming the Mojave Stage into a complete reverie.
This collaboration wasn’t the first for the duo. Lusk had previously performed with Moby on stage, presenting their reimagined take on “When It’s Cold I’d Like To Die,” which was released earlier this year and led to a remix album featuring a dozen diverse interpretations. “This new version of ‘When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die’ with Jacob Lusk from Gabriels is just so beautiful,” Moby shared on social media. “I first heard Jacob sing a few years back and immediately fell in love with his voice.”
Lusk, who captivated the Coachella audience like the legendary singers of the past, reflected on the response to the moment on Instagram: “Completely overwhelmed by all the kindness I’ve received over the last few days. Huge thanks to Mr. Moby, the entire band and crew for allowing me to sing with you all. This past weekend Coachella was something special. There was a profound sense of love in that tent and on that stage. I’ve often felt isolated, anxious, or out of place. These last few days have reminded me there’s a place for everyone, including me.”
Regarding Moby, he has declared that he will donate 100% of his earnings from the Coachella performance to animal rights organizations, a cause he has passionately supported since the start of his career. “My primary role in life is as an animal rights activist,” Moby stated, “and my aim is to leverage the revenue and visibility from my Coachella appearance to highlight and financially assist animal rights organizations.”
You can catch Moby’s Weekend 2 performance on Friday, April 17 at 8:10 p.m. on the Mojave stage channel on YouTube. While it’s uncertain whether Lusk will be present, it would be wonderful to see him there.
